Freedom Quiz

Freedom Quiz: Have you ever met or talked with someone who actually was willing to say he hated freedom or that he simply didn’t believe that people should be free?

Even the most statist and collectivist politician (in this country, at least) will give lip service to “freedom.” They all praise liberty and proudly tell us they are four-square behind it. Indeed, they usually claim that their latest legal proposal or regulation or policy that dictates what we must or must not do will actually increase the freedom of American citizens. I think it will be a long time coming before we get political truth-in-campaigning promises and see folks placing “I Hate Freedom” or “Freedom Sucks” or “Freedom is Overrated” bumper stickers on their cars.

Indeed, there are many libertarian-leaners who assure us they are “for” freedom. A significant number will go even farther and claim we are free. I have no reason to doubt their sincerity in making such a statement, though I do doubt their...well, um, never mind.

Given that quizzes are popular fodder in mainstream publishing, I thought I would offer one of my own for Atlas readers. It’s easy! It’s fun! It’s nonfattening! Simple “yes” or “no” answers. Uncomplicated scoring. Rewarding insights and possibilities for personal growth. What more could one desire?

So here goes. The Atlas Freedom Quiz (v. 1). Circle “yes” if you agree with the statement. Circle “no” if you disagree.

Abstract

Abortion is largely accepted even for reasons that do not have anything to do with the fetus' health. By showing that (1) both fetuses and newborns do not have the same moral status as actual persons, (2) the fact that both are potential persons is morally irrelevant and (3) adoption is not always in the best interest of actual people, the authors argue that what we call ‘after-birth abortion’ (killing a newborn) should be permissible in all the cases where abortion is, including cases where the newborn is not disabled.

A paper published in the Journal of Medical Ethics argues that abortion should be extended to make the killing of newborn babies permissible, even if the baby is perfectly healthy, in a shocking example of how the medical establishment is still dominated by a eugenicist mindset.

The paper is authored by Alberto Giubilini of Monash University in Melbourne and Francesca Minerva at the Centre for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics at the University of Melbourne.

The authors argue that “both fetuses and newborns do not have the same moral status as actual persons,” and that because abortion is allowed even when there is no problem with the fetus’ health, “killing a newborn should be permissible in all the cases where abortion is, including cases where the newborn is not disabled.”

“The fact that both are potential persons is morally irrelevant,” the authors claim, arguing that adoption is not a reasonable counter-argument because the parents of the baby might be economically or psychologically burdened the process and the mother may “suffer psychological distress”. How the mother could not also “suffer psychological distress” by having her newborn baby killed is not explained.

“Merely being human is not in itself a reason for ascribing someone a right to life. Indeed, many humans are not considered subjects of a right to life: spare embryos where research on embryo stem cells is permitted, fetuses where abortion is permitted, criminals where capital punishment is legal,” the authors write.

The practice of infanticide has its origins in barbaric eras of ancient history, but it is still common is many areas of the world today, including China where the one child policy allied with the social pressure to have boys has resulted in a massive imbalance in the population. Studies have found that 40 million girls are ‘missing’ in China as a result of gender-selective abortion and infanticide. In India, there are 50 million less females for the same reasons.

In Pakistan, over 1000 babies a year are the victims of infanticide, which is rarely punished.

Matthew Archbold of the National Catholic Register explains how the legalization of infanticide, killing newborn babies, is the logical conclusion of the starting point of the argument, which is that the fetus is not human and has no right to live.

“The second we allow ourselves to become the arbiters of who is human and who isn’t, this is the calamitous yet inevitable end. Once you say all human life is not sacred, the rest is just drawing random lines in the sand,” he writes.

Respected bioethicist Wesley J. Smith notes that the debate surrounding “the right to dehydrate the persistently unconscious,” which eventually led to events like the Terri Schiavo case, started with articles in bioethics and medical journals.

“Or to put it another way, too often bioethics, isn’t. On the other hand, to be fair, the ancient Romans exposed inconvenient infants on hills. These authors may want to take us back to those crass values, but I assume they would urge a quicker death,” he writes.

Australian attraction to offer tours in Klingon language - CSMonitor.com: On Aug. 22, the Klingon language will be one of three options added to the eight currently available for the self-guided audio tour through the "Nettle Cave." As many as 200,000 people pass through the chambers of this underground labyrinth annually, making it the most visited cave on the continent, Jenolan Caves Reserve Trust officials said in a statement.

"We are poised to boldly go where no other tourist attraction has gone before, with the first cave tour in the world to be available in the Klingon language," Reserve Trust officials said. [Star Trek Technologies in Real Life]

Two Klingon scholars from the United States visited the Jenolan Caves in early July, the officials added. After Michael Roney Jr., a professional Klingon translator based in Indianapolis, and science fiction author Tracy Canfield finalized the translation of the tour script, they joined forces in recording the new, properly harsh-sounding audio track.

Speaking in the alien language, Roney, who goes by the Klingonese name of "naHQun," remarked, "lH, qar'a'" in expressing the beauty of the caves.

The formation of these caves in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales dates back 340 million years, placing the subterranean limestone structure amongst the planet's oldest caves open to the public.

Film Exposes "Anti-Semitism" Racket - henrymakow.com: Prisoners of Zion

After giving the filmmaker considerable access, ADL Director Abe Foxman suppressed this movie because it revealed there is precious little anti-Semitism, certainly not enough to justify the ADL's 29 US offices, annual $70,000,000 fund raising, not to mention Foxman's $527,000 salary.

by Henry Makow Ph.D.

Yo'av Shamir's 2009 documentary on anti-Semitism, "Defamation," demonstrates that Jews are prisoners of Zionism as much as Palestinians and the rest of the world.

I found it painful to watch young Israelis being forced into mental cages. They steel themselves in fury against the world as they watch Holocaust atrocities and are taught that Jews are universally hated for no reason. On a trip to Poland, they actually play act being hunted by the Nazis.

As a Jew, I was brainwashed like them, taught that Israel is an indispensable "insurance policy" in case of a recurrence of "irrational hatred" from our Gentile neighbors. Amazing how few Jews question this narrative.

I wanted to tell these kids that the Holocaust took place to manipulate Jews into creating the state of Israel. In the 1930's, half of all German Jews intermarried. The Rothschilds financed Hitler in order to transfer these Jews to Israel, the linchpin of their New World Order. The Zionists worked hand-in-hand with the Nazis.

Jews are "hated" because, wittingly or unwittingly, they have been part of the Rothschild's plan for world tyranny, now entering fruition. The holocaust and "anti Semtism" just give them an excuse to execute this plot with moral impunity.

If Jews want to understand their true position, they must realize that organized Jewry is not on the side of the angels and probably never was. It serves the pernicious agenda of the cabalist bankers. Thanks to Freemasonry, almost all non-Jewish organizations in the West -- political, economic and cultural -- have also been subverted.

After giving the filmmaker considerable access, ADL Director Abe Foxman suppressed this movie because it revealed there is precious little anti-Semitism, certainly not enough to justify the ADL's 29 US offices, annual $70,000,000 annual fund raising, not to mention Foxman's $527,000 salary.

Most non-Jews can distinguish between organized Jewry and the Jewish dupe on the street. Thus, in the film, the ADL was hard pressed to come up with instances of anti-Semitism. Some Black kids threw stones at a school bus; a cop was overheard making a disparaging remark; a Jew couldn't take off a Jewish holiday.

The ADL are psychological thugs whose purpose is to portray any opposition to Israel and the New World Order as racism. For example, there is plenty of evidence that 9-11 was a Mossad-CIA false flag. The function of the ADL is to squelch this line of investigation.

According to a report by Lyndon Larouche's Executive Intelligence Review, the ADL is a lobbying and intelligence arm of the Rothschilds.

If Abe Foxman is an indication, anti-Semitism is caused by the behavior of certain Jews. The most appalling scene shows Foxman leading a delegation to Kiev where he lectures a Special Adviser to President Viktor Yushchenko.

Foxman doesn't want Ukrainians comparing the 1930's famine death of more than ten million Ukrainian farmers with the "Holocaust." The Jewish holocaust is absolutely unique and there can be no equating of the two.

"Be careful not to link the two, as your genocide, our genocide," he says.

The Special Adviser stifled his indignation, saying merely, "Understood."

holodomor.jpegConsider how galling this must have been to him. The Holodomor (literally "killing by hunger") was instigated by two Communist Jews, Josef Stalin and Lazar Kaganovitch.

Imagine if the Nazis had won the Second World War instead of the Zionists.

Imagine a delegation of rich Nazis visiting Jerusalem today and demanding that the Jews stop referring to the slaughter of European Jews at Nazi hands as a "Holocaust."

The Nazis say: "Stop comparing your genocide to the real genocide: The massacre of 250,000 innocent German civilians in the fire bombing of Hamburg and Dresden."

Surely this inability on the part of many Jews to see our common humanity, to be objective and honest, to see the other man's viewpoint is one of the causes of anti-Semitism. It seems to originate in the Talmudic attitude that non-Jews are not quite human.

Why is the Holocaust franchise so important to organized Jewry? As I said, "guilt" is the shield behind which "Zionists" are used to enslave the world. Members of the ADL delegation admit in the film, we "play on that guilt."

FINAL COMMENTS

The film illustrates how truly naive many ADL officials are about their true role. They opened up their operations to this Israeli filmmaker expecting to be portrayed as heroes.

Foxman coyly denied the ADL has special power. "The perception of the power of the Jew is one of the signs of anti-Semitism," he says. [Foreign officials] truly believe we can make a difference in Washington. We don't want to disabuse them!"

fstein.jpegThe film contains an excellent portrait of Professor Norman Finkelstein whom I regard as a true Jewish hero. The ADL's obsession with anti-Semitism is "pathological narcissism," he says. "The Jews are the richest most successful ethnic group in the USA."

Finkelstein, who was fired from his university due to Jewish pressure, calls Foxman a thug and compares him to Hitler, saying, "at least Hitler didn't do it for the money."

Like all cultural works today that reveal the truth, this film was suppressed by the Zionists.

According to Wikipedia, "After the film was screened at the Tribeca Film Festival, the Anti-Defamation League issued a statement denouncing the film, stating that it "belittles the issue (of anti-Semitism) ... and cheapens the Holocaust. It is Shamir's perverse, personal, political perspective and a missed opportunity to document a serious and important issue."

New York Times reviewer Neil Genzlinger states that while these ideas deserve a thorough and dispassionate discussion, Shamir has not provided it in this film. "...it feels like just another day on the Op-Ed page."

The documentary cost about $1.4 million to make. It grossed $17,000 in theaters.

This illustrates how not only Jews, but all of us are held prisoners by the Zionist control of culture, another cause of anti-Semitism.

Throughout history, anti-Semitism was often organized by the Illuminati, (i.e. Zionists) as a way of manipulating Jews. Now the same tactic, false flag terrorism, is used to manipulate everybody.

One of the guides on the teenagers' tour of Nazi concentration camps in Poland said he had reservations about perpetuating this "death industry."

"We'll never become normal people," he said.

That statement will apply to us all, as long as we remain prisoners of Zion.

SCOTTISH SONG ~ SCOTLAND THE BRAVE (LYRICS) - YouTube

SCOTTISH SONG ~ SCOTLAND THE BRAVE (LYRICS) - YouTube: 1. Let Italy boast of her gay gilded waters
Her vines and her bowers and her soft sunny skies
Her sons drinking love from the eyes of her daughters
Where freedom expires amid softness and sigh

2. Scotlands blue mountains wild where hoary cliffs are piled
Towering in grandeur are dearer tae me
Land of the misty cloud, land of the tempest loud
Land of the brave and proud, land of the free

3. Enthroned on the peak of her own highland mountains
The spirit of Scotia reigns fearless and free
Her green tartan waving o'er blue rock and fountain
And proudly she sings looking over the sea

4. Here among my mountains wild I have serenly smiled
When armies and empires against me were hurled
Firm as my native rock, I have withstood the shock
Of England, of Denmark, of Rome, and the world

5. But see how proudly her war steeds are prancing
Deep groves of steel trodden down in their path
The eyes of my sons like their bright swords are glancing
Triumphantly riding through ruin and death

6. Bold hearts and nodding plumes wave o'er their bloody tombs
Deep-eyed in gore is the green tartans wave
Shivering are the ranks of steel, dire is the horsemans wheel
Victorious in battlefield, Scotland the brave.

7. Bold hearts and nodding plumes wave o'er their bloody tombs
Deep-eyed in gore is the green tartans wave
Shivering are the ranks of steel, dire is the horsemans wheel
Victorious in battlefield, Scotland the brave.
Victorious in battlefield, Scotland the brave.

Survey Finds Doctors Not Always Honest With Patients - Kaiser Health News

Survey Finds Doctors Not Always Honest With Patients - Kaiser Health News: Survey Finds Doctors Not Always Honest With Patients

Feb 09, 2012

Most physicians paint overly optimistic prognoses for their patients, and many have withheld information concerning their medical mistakes and financial relationships with drug companies and device manufacturers, according to a national survey published in Health Affairs.

The Associated Press: Study Finds MDs Not Always Honest With Patients
Trust your doctor? A survey finds that some doctors aren't always completely honest with their patients. More than half admitted describing someone's prognosis in a way they knew was too rosy. Nearly 20 percent said they hadn't fully disclosed a medical mistake for fear of being sued. And 1 in 10 of those surveyed said they'd told a patient something that wasn't true in the past year. The survey, by Massachusetts researchers and published in this month's Health Affairs, doesn't explain why, or what wasn't true (Neergaard, 2/9)

Boston Globe: Survey Shows Where Doctors Shade The Truth
Most physicians paint overly optimistic prognoses for their patients, and many have told lies or withheld information concerning their medical mistakes and financial relationships with drug companies and device manufacturers, according to a national survey conducted by researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital. The 2009 survey of nearly 1,900 doctors, published yesterday in the journal Health Affairs, shows that many doctors do not adhere to the standards of medical societies and accreditation groups, which have long required doctors to be open and honest with their patients (Kotz, 2/9).

The Baltimore Sun: Do Doctors Lie To Patients?
Researchers from Harvard Medical School and the Mongan Institute for Health Policy at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston surveyed 1,891 physicians nationwide and one-tenth said they had told a patient something untruthful in the last year. Nearly 20 percent of physicians surveyed said they had not fully disclosed an error to a patient in the previous year because they feared a malpractice case. Doctors feared lawsuits even though research has shown prompt disclosure cuts down on malpractice cases (Walker, 2/8).

WBUR's CommonHealth blog: Doctors Not Always Open, Honest With Patients, Survey Finds
Specifically, about one-third of the survey respondents didn’t completely agree with disclosing serious medical errors to patients because they feared a malpractice case; two-fifths did not completely agree that they should disclose their financial relationships with drug companies to patients; and over one-tenth said in the past year, they’d actually told patients something that wasn’t true (Zimmerman, 2/8).

Kaiser Health News: Study: Some Physicians Not Always Honest With Patients
A vast majority of physicians said they embraced the American Board of Internal Medicine Foundation’s Charter on Medical Professionalism which calls for fully informing patients about the risks and benefits of interventions. But more than a third said they did not completely agree it was necessary to disclose “all serious medical errors to affected patients” (Marcy, 2/8).

Medscape: Honesty Is a Sometimes Policy for Many Physicians
To medical ethicist Linda Emanuel, MD, PhD, at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, the survey results represent a "welcome wake-up call" for her profession. ... In their article, Dr. Iezzoni and co-authors report that honesty and openness among physicians vary on the basis of demographic factors, specialty, and practice setting. Women and underrepresented minorities in medicine are more likely to follow the principles laid out in the Charter on Medical Professionalism (Lowe, 2/8).

Journal of the American Medical Association: Survey: Some Physicians Not Always Honest or Frank With Patients
Not all physicians are as truthful or open in their communications with patients as the latter may expect, behavior that is in conflict with at least some of the tenets of the Charter on Medical Professionalism, according to new findings appearing today in Health Affairs. The Charter on Medical Professionalism, which is endorsed by more than 100 professional groups worldwide and the US Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, requires openness and honesty in physicians’ communication with patients (Mitka, 2/8).

The world's greatest snow-capped peaks, which run in a chain from the Himalayas to Tian Shan on the border of China and Kyrgyzstan, have lost no ice over the last decade, new research shows.

The discovery has stunned scientists, who had believed that around 50bn tonnes of meltwater were being shed each year and not being replaced by new snowfall.

The study is the first to survey all the world's icecaps and glaciers and was made possible by the use of satellite data. Overall, the contribution of melting ice outside the two largest caps – Greenland and Antarctica – is much less then previously estimated, with the lack of ice loss in the Himalayas and the other high peaks of Asia responsible for most of the discrepancy.

Bristol University glaciologist Prof Jonathan Bamber, who was not part of the research team, said: "The very unexpected result was the negligible mass loss from high mountain Asia, which is not significantly different from zero."

The melting of Himalayan glaciers caused controversy in 2009 when a report from the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change mistakenly stated that they would disappear by 2035, instead of 2350. However, the scientist who led the new work is clear that while greater uncertainty has been discovered in Asia's highest mountains, the melting of ice caps and glaciers around the world remains a serious concern.

"Our results and those of everyone else show we are losing a huge amount of water into the oceans every year," said Prof John Wahr of the University of Colorado. "People should be just as worried about the melting of the world's ice as they were before."

His team's study, published in the journal Nature, concludes that between 443-629bn tonnes of meltwater overall are added to the world's oceans each year. This is raising sea level by about 1.5mm a year, the team reports, in addition to the 2mm a year caused by expansion of the warming ocean.

The scientists are careful to point out that lower-altitude glaciers in the Asian mountain ranges – sometimes dubbed the "third pole" – are definitely melting. Satellite images and reports confirm this. But over the study period from 2003-10 enough ice was added to the peaks to compensate.

The impact on predictions for future sea level rise is yet to be fully studied but Bamber said: "The projections for sea level rise by 2100 will not change by much, say 5cm or so, so we are talking about a very small modification." Existing estimates range from 30cm to 1m.

Wahr warned that while crucial to a better understanding of ice melting, the eight years of data is a relatively short time period and that variable monsoons mean year-to-year changes in ice mass of hundreds of billions of tonnes. "It is awfully dangerous to take an eight-year record and predict even the next eight years, let alone the next century," he said.

The reason for the radical reappraisal of ice melting in Asia is the different ways in which the current and previous studies were conducted. Until now, estimates of meltwater loss for all the world's 200,000 glaciers were based on extrapolations of data from a few hundred monitored on the ground. Those glaciers at lower altitudes are much easier for scientists to get to and so were more frequently included, but they were also more prone to melting.

The bias was particularly strong in Asia, said Wahr: "There extrapolation is really tough as only a handful of lower-altitude glaciers are monitored and there are thousands there very high up."

The new study used a pair of satellites, called Grace, which measure tiny changes in the Earth's gravitational pull. When ice is lost, the gravitational pull weakens and is detected by the orbiting spacecraft. "They fly at 500km, so they see everything," said Wahr, including the hard-to-reach, high-altitude glaciers.

"I believe this data is the most reliable estimate of global glacier mass balance that has been produced to date," said Bamber. He noted that 1.4 billion people depend on the rivers that flow from the Himalayas and Tibetan plateau: "That is a compelling reason to try to understand what is happening there better."

He added: "The new data does not mean that concerns about climate change are overblown in any way. It means there is a much larger uncertainty in high mountain Asia than we thought. Taken globally all the observations of the Earth's ice – permafrost, Arctic sea ice, snow cover and glaciers – are going in the same direction."

Grace launched in 2002 and continues to monitor the planet, but it has passed its expected mission span and its batteries are beginning to weaken. A replacement mission has been approved by the US and German space agencies and could launch in 2016.

Polar Bears Thrive, Contrary to WWF Claims

Polar Bears Thrive, Contrary to WWF Claims: You've probably seen the commercials; TV actor Noah Wyle (ER, The Librarian) somberly informs us of an impending grave catastrophe: "A tragedy is unfolding in the world today. Climate change is threatening one of the most magnificent wild animals on the planet. Polar bears. They're struggling to survive."

Heart-tugging violins accompany video footage of a mother polar bear and her cuddly cub on a small ice flow.

The ice is melting all around them and food is becoming harder to find as they lose their hunting grounds. Climate change. It's happening right now and its leaving mothers weaker and unable to provide for their young and cubs dying without enough to eat. As the struggle and the search for food continues polar bears are hanging on for survival. Polar bears are on their way to extinction. If we don't act now, most will die in our children's lifetime. But you can change that. Call now and join the Wildlife Rescue Team. For just $16 a month you'll be part of the most ambitious effort to save wildlife and wild places the world has ever seen.... If we don't act now, it could be too late for the polar bear.

It is a fundraising appeal for the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), one of the wealthiest environmentalist groups on the planet. The implied message is that the mother bear and cub in the film have been caught by the camera crew in their last desperate gasps, victims of man-made global warming. We are supposed to believe from the images we see, based upon Wyle's narration, that they are weak and starving and soon will be joining the other members of their rapidly dying species.

However, there are several big problems with this picture and message. First of all, there is no evidence provided in the commercial or by WWF in its literature or on its website that this particular polar bear and her cub are weak, starving, or in any distress whatsoever. For all we can tell they are healthy and happy, floating on their iceberg as polar bears do and have done since they've been around on this planet. It is only the narration and the music that suggest otherwise. But, more importantly, the main message of the commercial is a ... big lie. No sense in mincing words. Completely contrary to the WWF's maudlin claims that the cuddly predators are on "their way to extinction," polar bear populations have been exploding. The number of polar bears in the world is four to five times greater than it was 50 years ago, increasing from around 5,000 to an estimated 25,000.

Canadian biologist Dr. Mitchell Taylor, one of the foremost authorities on polar bears, says: "We're seeing an increase in bears that's really unprecedented, and in places where we're seeing a decrease in the population it's from hunting, not from climate change." Dr. Taylor is a real scientist who actually goes out into the field and tracks, observes, tags, and counts polar bears and other arctic mammals. He has been doing this for over two decades, unlike the computer modelers who are making their dire predictions based on their own theoretical climate scenarios.

Abortion safer than giving birth: study | Reuters

Abortion safer than giving birth: study | Reuters: - Enviado mediante la barra Google

(Reuters Health) - Getting a legal abortion is much safer than giving birth, suggests a new U.S. study published Monday.

Researchers found that women were about 14 times more likely to die during or after giving birth to a live baby than to die from complications of an abortion.

Experts say the findings, though not unexpected, contradict some state laws that suggest abortions are high-risk procedures.

The message is that getting an abortion and giving birth are both safe, said Dr. Anne Davis, who studies obstetrics and gynecology at the Columbia University Medical Center in New York, and wasn't involved in the new study.

"We wouldn't tell people, 'Don't have a baby because it's safer to have an abortion' -- that's ridiculous," she told Reuters Health. "We're trying to help women who are having all reproductive experiences know what to expect."

An induced abortion -- like any other medical procedure -- requires getting informed consent from the woman, said Dr. Bryna Harwood, an ob-gyn from the University of Illinois in Chicago who also didn't participate in the new research.

That means women understand and acknowledge the risks of their different options.

What makes it complicated, Harwood added, is when the law interferes and requires doctors to state information that isn't always balanced or medically sound -- usually exaggerating the risk of abortion.

The researchers on the new study combined government data on live births and pregnancy- and abortion-related deaths with estimates on legal abortions performed in the U.S. from the Guttmacher Institute, which conducts sexual and reproductive health research and education.

Dr. Elizabeth Raymond from Gynuity Health Projects in New York City and Dr. David Grimes of the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, Chapel Hill, found that between 1998 and 2005, one woman died during childbirth for every 11,000 or so babies born.

That compared to one woman of every 167,000 who died from a legal abortion.

The researchers also cited a study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention which found that, from 1998 to 2001, the most common complications associated with pregnancy -- including high blood pressure, urinary tract infections and mental health conditions -- happened more often in women who had a live birth than those who got an abortion.

In their report, published in the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology, Raymond and Grimes write that the findings aren't surprising given that women are pregnant for a lot longer when they decide to have a baby and so have more time to develop complications.

Harwood said previous studies have also shown the safety of legal abortions.

Most abortions have typically been done surgically, she told Reuters Health. But since the abortion drug mifepristone was approved for use in the United States in 2000, the number of medically-induced abortions has been on the rise.

Both methods are now considered equally safe, she said, with the main risk -- though very small -- coming from medication- and procedure-related infections.

Depending on the state, however, doctors legally must go over the risks of abortion in language that may be misleading, researchers said, with skewed lists of possible complications. Others require a 24-hour waiting period in between the counseling and the abortion itself.

Harwood said that laws regarding what's said between the doctor and a woman seeking an abortion often hamper doctors' attempts to inform patients in a balanced way.

"It is certainly an impediment to have the state dictate my informed consent process beyond the usual," Harwood told Reuters Health.

"Abortion care and pregnancy care should not really be any different than consenting people for any other procedure."

Davis agreed that state-mandated discussions have no place in abortion counseling. She said she was glad to see the new report, which helps dispel "misinformation" and "lies" about abortion risks included in some state laws -- such as the idea that abortion is linked to cancer.

"Women who are having abortions are having a safe, common surgical procedure or taking medication for the same reason," she told Reuters Health

"They should feel confident that the medical care they're having is safe, long-term and short-term."
