5. 9 March 2004 Midnight Special Bookstore/Southern California Federation of Scientists 5 Prognosis: Rising global temperature and greenhouse gases. Shrinking amount of cropland per person. Decline in amount of wheat and rice/person. Shrinking area of tropical moist forests. Decreasing oceanic fish harvest per person. Increasing number of people dying of AIDS. Declining human sperm count. Growing gap between rich and poor Reduced biodiversity Ehrich and Schneider

6. 9 March 2004 Midnight Special Bookstore/Southern California Federation of Scientists 6 Prognosis: Slowing, but continuing population growth, already far beyond what is estimated to be the earth’s maximum carrying capacity. Continuing unsustainable economic growth, e.g, fossil fuel agriculture.

7. 9 March 2004 Midnight Special Bookstore/Southern California Federation of Scientists 7 Sustainable Development Maximum Carrying Capacity vs. Optimum Population “The greater the population the greater the restrictions necessary to achieve sustainability.

8. 9 March 2004 Midnight Special Bookstore/Southern California Federation of Scientists 8 The Perfect Correlation All industrialized countries have less than replacement birth rates.

17. 9 March 2004 Midnight Special Bookstore/Southern California Federation of Scientists 17 New International Scientific Order Elements: Science and space exploration as common adventures and common heritages of the family of humanity to which all are allowed to contribute. Realize the fullness of human rational potential in all countries. Divert science from the dispatch of death and destruction to humanistic goals, including sustainable development.

18. 9 March 2004 Midnight Special Bookstore/Southern California Federation of Scientists 18 New International Scientific Order The Strategy: Since this is a global effort, it requires global organization, both governmental and popular. Corollary: Not only do people require organization about their (multiple) identities (including professional, scholarly, and scientific), they need international, even supranational affiliation, facing a common adversary.

(JAOG)

Tree-huggers advocate the use of sail ships to "save the planet"

The french are once again shipping their wines under sail, and in french fashion, they are doing it in style. No modern ship would do, they are transporting the wines on the Belem, a beautiful three-masted 19th century barque.

The 170 foot Belem, which was launched in 1896, spent years transporting chocolate from South America, and gets it’s name from the Brazilian port. The Belem is the first of seven three-masted vessels to be in service by 2013, planned to transport French wines as far as Canada.

Frederic Albert, owner of the ship. says that shipping 60,000 bottles of wine by sail will save 18,375 pounds of carbon. Every bottle transported by the Belem will be labelled: “Carried by sailing ship, a better deal for the planet”.

In Frederic's words: “My idea was to do something for the planet and something for the wines of Languedoc. One of my grandfathers was a wine-maker and one was a sailor.”

Some Asian glaciers 'putting on mass'

Some glaciers on Asia's Karakoram mountains are defying the global trend and getting thicker, say researchers.

A French team used satellite data to show that glaciers in part of the Karakoram range, to the west of the Himalayan region, are putting on mass.

The reason is unclear, as glaciers in other parts of the Himalayas are losing mass - which also is the global trend.

The region's glaciers are poorly studied, yet provide a vital water source for more than a billion people.

The response of Himalayan glaciers to global warming has been a hot topic ever since the 2007 report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which contained the erroneous claim that ice from most of the region could disappear by 2035.

Although often regarded as part of the Himalayas, the Karakoram range is technically a separate chain that includes K2, the world's second-highest peak.

Much of the region is inaccessible, and there has been a general recognition that observations need to be stepped up in order to clarify what is going on.

49 Former NASA Scientists Send A Letter Disputing Climate Change

Select excerpts from the letter:

* “The unbridled advocacy of CO2 being the major cause of climate change is unbecoming of NASA’s history of making an objective assessment of all available scientific data prior to making decisions or public statements.”
* “We believe the claims by NASA and GISS, that man-made carbon dioxide is having a catastrophic impact on global climate change are not substantiated.”
* “We request that NASA refrain from including unproven and unsupported remarks in its future releases and websites on this subject.”

Mars Viking Robots 'Found Life' : Discovery News

Mars Viking Robots 'Found Life' : Discovery News: New analysis of 36-year-old data, resuscitated from printouts, shows NASA found life on Mars, an international team of mathematicians and scientists conclude in a paper published this week.

Further, NASA doesn't need a human expedition to Mars to nail down the claim, neuropharmacologist and biologist Joseph Miller, with the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine, told Discovery News.

"The ultimate proof is to take a video of a Martian bacteria. They should send a microscope -- watch the bacteria move," Miller said.

"On the basis of what we've done so far, I'd say I'm 99 percent sure there's life there," he added.
